Managing your non - super investments

50Plus Wealth provides a comprehensive service to clients who wish to "self manage" their non super investments. This service has two components;

  1. Advice
  2. Administration

Advice

  • establishing the most appropriate structure for your investments
  • maximising the tax effectiveness of your investment portfolio
  • coordination of various tax issues with your accountant
  • minimising investment risk - recognising your risk tolerance and capacity
  • constructing your investment portfolio
  • ongoing and regular review/update of your portfolio

Administration

  • secure online access to your portfolio, with all investment values updated daily
  • online access to all portfolio transactions
  • comprehensive portfolio reports

Note: many clients provide their accountant with online access to their administration account. In most instances, this approach is all that is required to complete the clients income tax return each year.

Our investment recommendations will generally involve directly held investments (see below). These investments have been selected after considering the research material we receive from a number of research providers.

Investments recommended by 50Plus Wealth include;

  • bank deposits
  • term deposits
  • preference shares (hybrids)
  • ordinary shares listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX)
  • ordinary shares listed on international exchanges
  • exchange traded funds
  • listed property trusts

As with our SMSF business, this service is designed to provide the greatest degree of control, flexibility and transparency. Let's look at these issue seperately;

Control

Investing directly (as opposed to investing in financial products) provides our clients with a number of important benefits. Some of these include;

  • control over where your funds are invested.
  • invest in assets you understand and feel comfortable with.
  • control over capital gains tax (CGT) issues, as you decide when to realise a capital gain or capital loss on an asset.
  • dealing direct means there is no entity between you and the asset. This means you have complete control when it comes to making decisions relating to that asset.
  • many directly held assets have no ongoing fees. For example, term deposits and shares.
  • listed shares - which typically make up a large portion of most investors portfolios, can be bought and sold in seconds, rather than days (as is often the case with financial products).

Flexibility

  • when you invest directly, you have greater flexibility as you are not subject to the specific rules relating to a financial product. Your circumstances may change regularly, and having the flexibility to make changes to your investment portfolio is important.
  • you will be able to invest in a much broader range of investments which are not available through many financial products.

Transparency

Transparency is a term used to describe how clearly an investment operates, how clear the fee structure is, and how clearly the issues which might impact your investment are outlined. Put another way, the more transparent the investment, the less that is "hidden" from you.

One of the most important issues for many investors is knowing where their money is invested. This is often difficult to determine when investing through a financial product (managed funds, etc). When you invest directly, you can see where your funds are invested at all times.

Client Communication

Regular communication with our clients includes the ongoing review of client portfolios (at least half yearly). We communicate on a regular basis through our daily news emails and through our Client Briefing Nights - which are held every four months. More importantly, if there are issues which might impact our clients, we will talk to them at that time - rather than wait until their review date.
